Common Uses for Office Computers

Office computers are simply PCs or Macs designed for office use. Depending on the type of computing required by employees, office computers vary in the way they are built and set up. Historically, IBM was one of the leaders in providing office computers for small and large businesses. One of the first office computers was the IBM Datamaster. This large all-in-one desktop computer was designed for all types of information processing at the time. It combined both data processing and word processing in one machine, with two 8-inch floppy drives for external storage. Albeit legacy hardware, the Datamaster's engineers later went on to design the IBM PC, the desktop computer which started the PC revolution.

Nowadays, IBM no longer dominates the world of office computers. It really depends on the office setup whether PCs or Macs are used. Each has their respective advantages and disadvantages. The number one determining factor when deciding between a PC and a Mac office computer is the industry-specific software you require. Certain types of software are only compatible with Windows (for a PC), while others are only compatible with iOS (for a Mac). Either way, specialized software is available for just about every industry that exists in the workplace today. The most common uses for office computers are data collection and management, business communication, and finances.

Most businesses require office computers to keep track of and analyze customer, client, and product data. In order to do that, software is required on the office computers. There is almost an endless amount of software for small businesses and large businesses available both online and offline, with more and more being developed each day. Using office computers to track and analyze data makes it much faster and more efficient than doing it the old-fashioned, manual way with pens and paper.

Business Communications

The most common use of office computers is for communications, both internal and external. Rather than using the telephone, which was the most popular method of communication until the 21st century, business have turned to email for faster, less-expensive communication. Also, desktop computers can be equipped with software that aids in different styles of communication, aside from emails. Word processing and publishing software are equipped with templates for report-writing, memos, brochures, and flyers, and others.


Computer software allows for easier tracking and managing of finances within a company. Spreadsheet and accounting software play a big role in invoicing, preparing taxes, and even doing payroll.
